Duke of Edinburgh Silver Qualifying Expedition

Our Year 11 students went on their long awaited Silver Qualifying Expedition this week to The Lake District. They spent 3 days and 2 nights exploring, sleeping and cooking outdoors. The weather was very wet, however the students persevered and showed real determination, grit and teamwork.

We are very proud of the effort, hard work and results of 2 years work on the students Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award. Certificates and pin badges will be posted out in due course.

We hope you enjoy looking at some of pictures taken on the groups final expedition trip with us.

National Windrush Day

In support and recognition of National Windrush day our students across the school created their own projects to celebrate. These ranged from display pieces, food markets (Jamaican Jerk Chicken and Curries went down a treat), costume design, presentations to hosting there very own Nottinghill Carnivals!! They had a great time, whilst learning about the improtant history and impact this event had on our country.

11W Countries of the Commonwealth Canada.

This week we have visited Canada as part of our work on the Commonwealth. We started off the week looking at totem poles, we then made some of our own. We also went into the outdoor classroom with Mrs Roddam, she showed us how to make a camp fire. We had a tasty treat by eating some s’mores and pancakes with maple syrup. The pupils have also painted red and white patterns to make Canadian windsocks. These are hung outside to Celebrate Canada day which is on July 1st! We have finished the week by baking butter tarts which are a favourite treat of the Canadians. Next week we are going to visit Cyprus.

8M Art & Design

These are just some of the paintings completed this week by pupils in 8M. They are currently working on their ‘Durham Doorway’ art project and have been looking at Durham Cathedral for inspiration for their work.

9P Final Frontiers STEM

In science, we have been looking at our solar system. We have learned about the interactions between the sun and the plants, the life of stars and the constellations. Today we looked at space travel. We looked at what effects flight. We made simple blow rockets and explored the shape, and number, of wings on flight.

Until next time.

6th Form Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Students complete their Award!

Our 6th form Bronze Duke of Edinburghs Award students went on their qualifying expedition this week to the Yorkshire Dales.

They spent 2 days and 1 night away from home. The weather was beautiful however very hot so there was lots of extra fluids being carried and sun cream applied!. They walked 7 miles on Day 1. Each student was asked to lead a leg of the planned route and did so successfully. On returning to the accommodation they all successfully cooked their evening meal safely on trangia stoves. After washing up and tidying away they all got themselves showered and changed for a well deserved sleep ready for the next days adventure.
They got up the next morning early, made their own breakfast and packed lunches then packed up the minibus ready for returning to school after their second walk. They managed another long route (6.5 miles), each taking a leg and leading well. They were all VERY pleased to complete the route after a short break for lunch and answering their assessment questions.

Over the 2 days they also took video footage and pictures of landscape, flora and fauna so they can make their presentation to the rest of 6th form in due course.

All the students have successfully passed their expedition section and we are so proud of their efforts and determination in such hot conditions. They have now completed their Bronze Award!

One of our Bronze students has also achieved a Special Certificate of Achievement for completing his Volunteering, Physical and Skills sections successfully.

Special thanks must go to our two Gold students who came along to help with this expedition and in doing so have completed their final residential section of their award. This means that after 3 years of hard work both have now completed their full Gold award and we await confirmation of their invitation to the Palace to receive their accolade!

Huge congratulations to all!

11C RRS Mocktails

In the RRS, we have been looking at Caribbean culture. We liked the look of their cocktails so decided to make a few. Today we made some mojito mocktails…

We found them very refreshing, especially with todays temperatures…

Until next time.

11W- Countries of the Commonwealth – India. 🇮🇳

This week in 11W we have visited India.  We started off the week colouring rangoli patterns.  We’ve made these into a flag that will be used in the sensory garden.  We also had a visit from Mrs Devgan from the Sixth Form who brought in some beautiful saris and a puja tray.  We had a smell of the incense.  We have also used green and orange paint to create collages of the Indian flag.  We finished off the week by baking cakes with cinnamon and decorated them with desiccated coconut!   We have thoroughly enjoyed our work on India!  Next week we are off to visit Canada.

Sixth Form Blackpool residential

A few of the Sixth Form are visiting Blackpool for a well deserved residential trip. They have all settled in and enjoying time away from home.
