My friend is gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans- how can I support them?
Listen to your friend, use their preferred name/pronouns, find a supportive member of staff to talk to. You could also find out about LGBT issues together.
What do I do if I accidentally get someone’s name and/or pronouns wrong?
Try to ask their name or pronouns first.
Apologise, then use the correct name/ pronouns.
Try to use the correct name/pronoun from now on.
What does ‘questioning’ mean?
This means someone who isn’t sure about their gender and sexuality.
What does non-binary mean?
A person who doesn’t identify as male or female.
What does pansexual means?
A person who is attracted another person, regardless of their gender or sexuality.
What is the difference between gender and sexuality?
Gender refers to how identify as a person (e.g. she/him). Sexuality refers to who a person is attracted to (e.g. heterosexual, bisexual, homosexual).
Who can I talk to about LGBT+ issues in school?
You can talk to any adult you feel comfortable speaking to.
Staff who have had LGBT+ training are:
Mrs Farrow, Mr Farrow, Mrs Pitchford, Miss Palmer, Mrs Turnbull, Miss Bartley, Miss Devonport, Mrs Spencer, Mrs Dobinson and Mrs Dobson. Look out for the rainbow lanyards.
