Tie-dyeing scrunchies with berries

Last week during our Friday afternoon enrichment our students foraged for a range of wild berries to use for dyeing.  They lit the a fire, kept it going and heated the berries with a small amount of water to make a natural dye.  While the berries were cooking the students started to crush the fruit with wood.

While the berries were cooking the students wrapped elastic bands around scrunchies to make different patterns.

Once the berries were cooked the students transferred them into a bowl, crushed them even more using wood and placed the scrunchies into the bowl where they stayed for an hour.

The students them washed them in cold water, removed all the berries and left them to dry over night.  The end result is fantastic, they are a very vibrant wild berry colour and ready to sell to raise money for the school.
