Horticulture

Over the last two weeks in Horticulture students have been making fat balls for the bird feeders in the garden, they have refilled the nuts and seed feeders. We have planted lemon seeds, cauliflower seeds and sliced tomatoes, hopefully we’ll have some photos of seedlings in a few weeks to post.

Regional Table Cricket Final

Sixth form students attended Maiden Castle in Durham on Tuesday to take part in the regional table cricket final. There were eight schools from across the region who took part, our students enjoyed the experience and played with excellent sportsmanship. Our team didn’t win but all agreed it was a great day and we wished the winners every success as they go on to Lord’s Cricket Ground for a national competition.

The photos show us before the games and afterwards when we all received our certificates.

Duke of Edinburgh Silver Expeditions

Our Year 11 Duke of Edinburgh students recently embarked on the final section of their silver award … EXPEDITION! They had an amazing time and did themselves proud. We wish them the best of luck in the future with their Duke of Edinburgh journey.

Bikeability

Some pupils in Year 11 have enjoyed a Bikeability session this morning. They used either bikes or trikes, depending on their level of confidence, and all listened really well to the instructors. An extra special mention goes to Baraa, who progressed from 3 wheels to 2 by the end of the session – well done!

9H – Afternoon Tea

9H have been exploring things that are quintessentially British. One of the class favourites was definitely Fish and Chips!

We explored symbols of Britain, and then moved on the to making our own afternoon tea. To increase independence students used a symbol-based recipe to work through the steps of jam finger sandwiches.

Today, Students in 7T had a visit from Police Officer Sam Stephenson from Durham Police to enrich our learning about emergency services in our Safety 999 topic for PFA.

PC Stephenson introduced herself to the students, discussed with them that the police aim to help people, recited the number 999 to call in an emergency and even allowed pupils to dress up and role play in her uniform vest.

The students had a great afternoon.

The Tempest Drama Lesson

8F enjoyed performing the opening scene of the play. They pretended to be on the ship as it was tossed and thrown amidst the storm!

ParentPay

To keep up with current times and in line with other schools The Oaks is moving to a near as possible cashless school.  We hope this will be beneficial for all parents as well.
ParentPay will be used in a much wider range including school fund, non-uniform days, residential trips etc.  Parents who do not already have a log in will receive a log in letter today that will come home with your young person.  Please have a look at ParentPay and reset your password as soon as you can, to familiarise yourself with it.  For those parents who already use ParentPay, it should come up with the additional choices rather than just dinner money.
Just a heads up – there will be a non-uniform day on Friday 5th May (more information will follow in due course) and we intend to use ParentPay for the voluntary donations.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Many thanks for your support.

9L Art & Design
