Low Mill Residential

The Sixth Form and 11D enjoyed their residential outdoor adventurous trip to Low Mill at Askrigg. The students took part in canoeing, caving, archery and climbing. They also visited Aysgarth Falls. All of the students developed a range of skills including resilience, team work, confidence, independence and respect for each other.

10s Forces and Air Resistance

10s have been continuing their work on forces. Today we focussed on air resistance and how it pushes against moving objects to slow them down. We looked at how this can have both positive and useful effects (such as for those who may use a parachute) but can also be a hinderance for others ( for example on planes  or cyclists that may not be as streamlined as required) inevitably slowing them down. We took the parachute out into the school grounds to demonstrate how air resistance works. We used the different sizes to show that the larger parachute created more air resistance than the smaller parachute.
We used our learning to play some group games.

Durham Works Speed Networking Event

Today our Year 10 pupils were lucky enough to take part in a speed networking meeting arranged by Durham Works and Mr Broom. The pupils were introduced to a range of business and employment ambassadors and were given the opportunity to ask a range of questions about the varying job roles, what each entailed, along with what a normal day would look like, and how to get into each career. Our pupils were well behaved and represented our school brilliantly. They asked some fantastic questions, gained invaluable insight and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thanks to Durham Works and Mr Broom for organising such a useful event for our pupils to take part in.

Coronation celebrations

11N and their ‘corridor friends’ came together to create a buffet and karaoke party to celebrate the King’s coronation, everyone had a great morning and were pleasantly surprised at the WIDE variety of music choices our singers made.

Low Mill

Some pupils from 11D and 6th form have enjoyed a residential trip to Low Mill Outdoor Activity Centre this week, where they took part in canoeing, caving, archery and climbing. It’s been an action-packed three days, but everyone enjoyed pushing themselves out of their comfort zones, trying new challenges and helping one another. All pupils were an absolute credit to the school while they were away, and we are so proud of you all!

11W coronation celebrations

Today we had lots of Coronation celebrations.  We came to school wearing our red, white and blue clothes.

We made our own version of King Charles’ quiche which the pupils have taken home to share with their parents and carers.

This afternoon we held a Coronation afternoon tea and sampled lots of delicious English foods.

7T PFA Safety 999

Today, Students in 7T had a visit from fire fighters and their fire engine to enrich our learning about emergency services in our Safety 999 topic for PFA.

The fire fighters introduced themselves to the students, discussed with them the different parts of the fire engine and the equipment they have to help people. Students even got a chance to hold some equipment and have a sit in the fire engine. At the end, the fire fighters put on the fire engines lights which all the students loved!

Coronation Celebrations in Sixth Form

We have had a fabulous morning in Sixth Form celebrating the Coronation. We have prepared our afternoon tea, sold some sweet cones we made last week and decorated Sixth Form for a party.

Then we were lucky enough to have a visit from Captain Raggybeard who delighted us with a celebratory story- telling session and we followed this our party food and music.

11W The King’s Coronation

In 11W we have been learning about our new King – King Charles and the upcoming coronation. We began the day watching Newsround and looking at the celebrations. We then made a group collage of a profile of King Charles. We also made a printed version of the Union Jack using stippling brushes and our footprints.

9H – learning about the coronation

This morning, 9H have been continuing to learn about the coronation. We watched a video explaining what will happen, pausing often to discuss what we can see. Using their voice, symbols or devices, students communicated about the different things they could see on screen.

Next we all took part in a search for items/people related to the coronation, ticking them off as we go to make sure we have everything we need!

11W horticulture

This week we planted the sweet pea plants which we sowed in February. We have been looking after them by watering them in the greenhouse. The flowers will be different colours – red, white and blue especially for the King’s Coronation.
