Tier 2: Good Autism Practice

Autism affects over 1 in 100 children and adults. All professionals working in education settings should be prepared to support pupils on the autism spectrum. This one day programme, endorsed by the Department for Education, has been designed to support all practitioners working directly with pupils, between the ages of 5 – 16, on the autism spectrum.

The programme consists of:

* Understanding autism and meeting the needs of each individual pupil.

* Partnership working and inclusive practice.

* Delivering an effective curriculum and developing good autism practice.

* The emotional, communication, physical and sensory environments.

The training uses a range of teaching tools including audio-visual, case studies, problem-solving scenarios, presentations, practical resources and activities.

By the end of the session, practitioners will have developed their knowledge and understanding of good autism practice. Practitioners will also be provided with guidelines and activities to support pupils with autism and allow them to reflect on and improve their own practice.

What does the Autism Education Trust do?

The purpose of the Autism Education Trust (AET) is to improve the education of children and young people with autism.

 

To achieve this, the AET:

  • Develops and delivers training and a range of materials for early years, school and post 16 educational settings.
  • Develops and disseminates information on educational practice.
  • Provides an interface between users, practitioners and policy makers in respect of educational practice.
  • Actively engages with young people, parents/carers and practitioners to inform its work.
  • Undertakes research into effective practice.

participants will be able to:

• Identify the four key areas of difference that need to be taken into account when working with children on the autism spectrum.

• Know the importance of understanding the individual child on the autism spectrum and their profile of strengths and weaknesses.

• Identify the key areas to help children on the autism spectrum build positive relationships with staff and their peers.

• Know that many children on the autism spectrum can be unusually sensitive to everyday sights, sounds, touch, tastes and smells. This can affect their learning and emotional state.

• Providing guidelines and activities to help practitioners to improve their practice when caring for or working with a child on the autism spectrum.

• Introducing practitioners to the early years autism competency framework to evaluate and develop how they work.

Basic autism awareness training for all staff within any educational setting (including office staff, governors, caretakers, drivers and escorts). Practical knowledge, hands – on tools and techniques for all staff working directly with pupils on the autism spectrum (including teaching assistants, lunch time staff and teachers). Deepens delegates’ understanding including theories of autism.

Advancing skills in developing and applying strategies to facilitate progress and achievement, for teachers, teaching assistants and SENDCO’s.

Focused training for staff in a specialist provision to support pupils with complex needs and aid participation.

(Including development of their personal or EHC plan).

For staff who may train or lead other staff in their setting, focusing on the development of a good autism provision.
