Year 11 Expressive Arts

Today, year 11 textiles are displaying their work to parents, staff and pupils. They have all worked hard throughout the course and produced some wonderful pieces as well as learning new skills. Well done year 11!

Making print blocks

As part of our textiles project, year 7 are making their own printing blocks. They will use the printing blocks to create a repeat pattern on their wind socks. Fantastic work year 7!

Textiles, using computer aided manufacture

Today some of 8G started making hats out of recycled fleece. The fleece began its life as plastic bottles before it was recycled. We started sewing our hats using the sewing machine and used an industrial embroidery machine to begin to decorate them. We think they look very professional.

The Oaks Supporting the Solan Connor Fawcett Trust

This week we had a special assembly by Mark Solan. He told us about his charity which helps families in the local area who are affected by cancer. Today in family groups we have designed hoodies to be entered into a competition which will be judged by the trust. We are also planning some fundraising for the charity.

Raising mental health awareness

As part of our focus on raising awareness of mental health issues in young people, Mr Tweddle carried out KS3 and KS4 assemblies. The assemblies were designed to show our pupils where they can go and how to reach out to others if they are having difficulties. We are covering the topic in more depth on Thursday in Family Groups.

Sixth Form cake decorating

Today, some of our Sixth Form have been using the skills they have learned over the last few weeks to decorate cup cakes with designs of their choice. Some themes included Valentine’s Day and Max Steele. The cakes looked great and were delicious.

Family Groups – Food bank appeal

In family groups today we have been learning about how food banks help people living in poverty. We are taking donations for the Spennymoor food bank to deliver them after 18th December.

Students designed appeal posters and leaflets, a selection of which will be sent out with a letter to parents letting them know about our appeal.
