Duke of Edinburgh students win award in County Durham Environment Awards 2020

I am delighted to share with you all the fantastic news that our Duke of Edinburgh students have been declared winners in this year’s County Durham  Environment Awards receiving “HIGHLY COMMENDED”  in the category “Schools and Colleges”.

They were nominated for an award by Louise Harrington of The Durham Heritage Coastal Charity for their hard work during the coastal challenge they undertook in partnership with her. They worked in very cold conditions during winter months to clear rubbish from all of the Durham coast beaches. They performed 16 beach cleans and a total of 68 black bin bags full of rubbish were collected. In addition they managed to remove a shopping trolley and a huge tyre!

This years ceremony was virtual and you can watch the results by following this link and watching the YouTube video.

The DofE team are VERY proud of every student involved and will be sure to display our trophy and certificate proudly in school once we receive it.

Well done !

The Big Sing !!!

Today a mix of year 7 and sixth form students took part in The Durham Vocal Festival event called The Big Sing.  The Oaks joined other SEND schools from across the region in a celebration of Singing & Signing. Everyone performed 4  songs that had been selected prior to the big day and had been rehearsed. Dr Paul Whittaker OBE led the event, making it great fun and all the students involved had a fabulous time, singing and signing fantastically!
